Summer End Joy

Believe it or not, it’s almost time for school to start. Back to the daily routines, to homework, to school projects, and to after-school activities. For many families, it’s overwhelming to think about the upcoming school year that is fast approaching.

So why not get the most out of the last days of summer? Here are some ideas for fun summer activities to help you enjoy the dwindling days of summer.

Back to school is just around the corner.

As the new school year approaches, make plans to enjoy the last days of summer.

1. Take a movie at the theater.

What could be more summer-like than spending an afternoon at the movies? The theater is a great place to cool off and escape the summer heat. Take advantage of the lower matinee prices that most theaters offer and take the kids to a movie. Choose a family-friendly film and take in the cool, air-conditioned comfort of the theater. Whether this family movie is a new release or a classic, you’re sure to enjoy spending some time together in the air-conditioning. You might even consider using this family movie time together as a reward for having the kids clean their rooms!

2. Make an excursion to CHOM.

Farmer's Market at Hands On Children's Museum

The Farmers Market exhibit at CHOM allows little ones to learn about fresh-from-the-farm produce.

If you’re looking for a summer activity in the local community that will keep the whole family entertained, look no further than the Hands On Children’s Museum (CHOM) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The museum offers excellent activities for the entire family that both educate and entertain.

Visit the Choctaw Indian Village, explore the shops of yesterday in the Old T-Town exhibit, or navigate your spaceship through the solar system at Space Station CHOM.

3. Treat the younger kids to a visit to Chuck E Cheese.

With its slogan “Where a Kid Can Be a Kid,” Chuck E Cheese offers food, fun, and family-friendly entertainment – just the thing to counter a hot summer day! The menu includes pizza, wings, appetizers, salads, and desserts – everything kids love. Enjoy the huge array of games, from high-tech video games to skill games and everything in between.

Adults can enjoy beer or wine while the kids will enjoy a wonderful time alley bowling or having fun by competing in one of the other games offered.

4. Be creative on a hot summer day with simple arts and crafts.

Creativity with finger paints

Indulge your kids with finger painting, a great way to encourage creativity.

Delve into easy and inexpensive arts and crafts that can be done at home. Using old t-shirts and store-bought dye packets, create colorful tie-dye t-shirts.

One of our favorite summer activities is downloading printable coloring pages and letting the kids create greeting cards, posters, or booklets with their finished work. This is a perfect way to encourage kids to be creative and find inspiration on a hot summer day. Make your own finger paints and allow your kids to go at it! Younger kids will be able to fill an afternoon with creative ideas.

5. Host a neighborhood block party.

Take advantage of the beautiful summer weather and gather your neighbors for some down-home fun in your own backyard. Rent a water slide, set up the badminton net, and play croquet. Have your kids help prepare treats, such as cookies, homemade ice cream treats, popcorn, and lemonade, for this fun summer activity for the entire family. Consider asking each family on the block to provide snacks or drinks, and let the fun begin!

6. Check off your summer bucket list with one last trip.

Adventure awaits! Schedule a quick weekend getaway. Load up the car with the entire family, crank up your summer playlist, and visit grandparents or friends.

Grab a last-minute deal at a beach resort or plan a one-night stay at a local or nearby hotel. Enjoy the swimming pool (don’t forget your pool noodles!), visit a restaurant for a delicious summer meal, or attend an outdoor concert. Your family will appreciate the “last hoorah” of summer.

Summer activities are so fun

We hope that you have enjoyed our list of summer activities and have found at least a few ideas to enjoy the last days of summer. Whether you choose to go see a movie, visit CHOM, treat the kids to Chuck E Cheese, or be creative with arts and crafts, we know that you will have a great time.

Summer’s coming to an end for sure, but that doesn’t mean that the fun is over. Make a plan with your family to squeeze in just a bit more fun – those are memories that last a lifetime.
