Tuscaloosa and Northport are home to many great walking trails that are especially beautiful during the fall. If you’re eager to get outdoors and enjoy the fall scenery, we’ve got some great suggestions for you.

1. Tuscaloosa Riverwalk

Beautiful Tuscaloosa Riverwalk

The Tuscaloosa Riverwalk is especially pretty this time of year.

The Tuscaloosa Riverwalk offers a 3.9-mile paved trail with some of the most beautiful scenery in the area. It is a popular place for road biking, running, and walking. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas. There are benches, picnic areas, playgrounds, and gazebos along the way. Take in the fall beauty along the southern banks of the Black Warrior River near downtown Tuscaloosa.

2. Munny Sokol Park Trail

The Munny Sokol Park Trail is a 2.2-mile loop generally thought to be an easy trail. Shady and woodsy, this trail is usually quiet and is good for beginners. You’re likely to encounter butterflies, squirrels, and maybe even deer. It is kid-friendly, dog-friendly, and also good for mountain biking. If you’re taking children along, check out Mason’s Place, the all-inclusive playground located in Sokol Park.

3. Hurricane Creek Park

Hurricane Creek Park is home to the Approach Trail and North Loop. The 3.1-mile loop is flat and easily walked, though the approach trail has more elevation. Great for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking, this trail is considered moderately challenging. Enjoy great views of Hurricane Creek (see below) and the quiet beauty of a pine forest year-round. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed.

Lake Harris Dam Trail

The Lake Harris Dam Trail provides a great view of the dam.

4. Lake Harris Dam Trail

The Lake Harris Dam Trail offers a beautiful getaway not far from the Tuscaloosa city limits. Experience this 1.4-mile out-and-back trail great for walking, hiking, and birding. Enjoy beautiful views of the lake and dam (see above). Though the beginning of the trail at the edge of steep cliffs can be a bit tricky, the path widens after the dam and is considered moderately challenging. If you’re seeking a lovely walk in the woods, this is the place for you.

5. Van DeGraff Park Short Trail

Enjoy the covered swings at the Van DeGraff Park Short Trail.

For a short walk not far from Tuscaloosa, try the Van DeGraff Park Short Trail in Northport. Located near the Municipal Airport, this 0.3-mile loop takes an average of five minutes to complete. It’s kid-friendly and dog-friendly and is a beautiful trail if you like water.

It features two historic bridges, streams, ponds, marshes, and lakes. You can rest on the covered swings overlooking the water and enjoy several picnic spots as well.
