Do you like tacos, quesadillas, margaritas, and guacamole? If so, you’re probably ready to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this Thursday, May 5.

Cinco de Mayo celebration

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on May 5th.

Whether you choose to eat at one of the area’s great Mexican restaurants or to create some of your own Mexican dishes at home, Cinco de Mayo is a great time to enjoy Mexican cuisine. For some of us, any reason to eat Mexican food is good. But, do you know what this holiday is all about? Do you know that it marks an important event in Mexican history?

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

Many people believe that this holiday is Mexican Independence Day, which actually falls in September, and commemorates Mexico’s independence from Spain. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the small Mexican army against the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture, cuisine, and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.

Parades take place on Cinco de Mayo

Parades take place in Puebla, Mexico to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

For many Mexican-Americans, the holiday represents the indomitable spirit of the Mexican people. They take pride in celebrating the victory of their underdog army, a small group of ill-equipped soldiers who defeated the larger and better-armed French army. Cinco de Mayo is an official holiday in Puebla, where the battle took place. Historical reenactments, parades, and special meals take place to commemorate the victory.
